About Barbara Tinius

Bio

Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Ms. Tinius came to the arts in a round-about way after her ikebana teacher required her to draw her floral creations.  After years of classes in various arts in the U.S., Japan and Europe, Ms. Tinius is now based in Hawaii where she teaches ikebana.  Painting primarily in soft pastel, her works often reflect her floral background with plants and vases often appearing as subjects in floral and still life paintings.  Since retiring, she’s had more time to devote to landscape paintings.  Ms. Tinius is a member of the Windward Wanderers, Pastel Artists of Hawaii, Windward Artists Guild, and the Association of Hawaiian Artists and has exhibited her paintings in Hawaii and Germany.

Artist Statement

In all of my artistic pursuits, I strive to capture some of the beauty that surrounds us, making us pause to appreciate some overlooked aspect or see things in a new way.   The subject is often something that just happened to catch my eye, although it often involves plants and vases, reflecting my background in the floral art of ikebana.  These works reflect my more recent efforts at landscape, often started en plein air and later touched up at home.
