About Roger Tinius

pastel, plein air, photography

Roger Tinius is a photographer and pastel artist living and working in Hawaii. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Towson State College in 1982. After decades of seeing and making photographs, both silver-based and digital, he took up pastels hoping to capture the impressions and visual rhythms that elude the camera. He has had the good fortune to live in several countries, in Europe and Asia, and brings an awareness of place and light to his landscape work.

“There are aspects I see in the landscape, rhythms, harmonies, and passages, that I cannot capture with a camera. Plein air painting requires me and allows me to look closely at a scene, capturing the passage of an hour instead of just a fraction of a second. After several years of working in pastels, I’m getting closer to putting my visions down on paper.”

Roger Tinius is a Signature Member of the Pastel Artists of Hawaii, and a member of the Windward Artists’ Guild and the Association of Hawaii Artists. He also leads the Windward Wanderers, a plein air painting group on the Windward Side. His works have been exhibited in galleries across Hawaii and on the mainland.
