“Whispering to the Earth
“12” x 12″
Acrylic on cradled board
$450 Local pick up only

Less is more. Simple over complicated. Spaciousness over density. Sometimes we need breathing room to take in the quiet happenings that tell a story without shouting. This painting is what I consider to be minimalistic—not too many colors or shapes, yet just enough to evoke contemplation of a feeling or moment that is meaningful for the viewer.

“Where Dreams Begin”
12″ x 12″
Acrylic on cradled board

When I’m on the verge of falling asleep for the night, myriad images float through my mind, nothing connected in a softly veiled space beckoning the unfamiliar. Then begin dreams, some funny, some uncomfortable, some joyous. The next morning I recall pieces of some and many not at all.  We live lives that influence what we dream and those dreams often influence our art.

“Wandering on High”
12″ x 12″
Acrylic on cradled board

The title for this painting came only after the painting was finished.  It reminded me of a view of the Earth from high above.  Through layers of paint that reveal bits of history beneath, I imagined layers of clouds with land and ocean features peeking through the breaks.  I find it quite humbling to know we are but a speck on this planet.  And this planet is but a speck in the universe.

I explored calligraphic marks and asemic writing with no specific meaning or intention as this painting was being created.   Using a limited palette of acrylic paint and ink plus collage, I worked the image into a composition that pleased me.  The vacuum of meaning allows the viewer and the artist to bring his/her own interpretations to the piece.  That is the essence of abstract art.

About Suzanne McCrary

After many years using a palette knife to create landscapes and seascapes, my art has shifted from representational painting to a more abstract approach.  I have a strong desire to explore what cannot be seen but only felt.  The feeling of freedom in creating from the unknown challenges me to work more intuitively.  When I begin a painting I often don’t have a fixed image in mind.  It’s a different creative process where preplanning takes a back seat and mark-making is playful, where paint is pushed, scraped, sanded, added and subtracted to reveal a history of underlying layers that often produces unexpected results.  How I use the process depends on my intentions which come into play at a certain point in the painting’s creation.  As it evolves, the imagery goes through continual change until the tensions of color, value and composition feel right.

Through experimentation, my inner voice guides me to new dimensions of expression with a spirit of free discovery.  There is no final destination, only an ongoing journey propelled by curiosity.  Each painting is meant to evoke a memory, a feeling or a new experience in the viewer.  Subjective interpretation is filtered through each person’s unique experience.  These reactions to my personal visual expression are one of the joys of creating abstract art.
